Dear Hevre,

I’m delighted to say that this evening we will be celebrating two amazing KHN students-Noah Levinson and Nina Meixler-who went through the Shul School and are being confirmed this evening! The curriculum we studied was centered on racism and Jew-hatred/anti-Semitism as well as efforts in our country toward becoming anti-racist, challenging white nationalism and becoming proud of our identities. I will lead services and they will co-lead a few of the prayers with me as well as share some of what they learned this year. I will offer a brief d’var Torah as well.

A year ago today, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. This U.S. national holiday marks the date confirming freedom to the last remaining enslaved people in the South and West. Though Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, very few people were immediately freed. A full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation and two long months after Richmond fell, the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were pronounced free people. I will be adding a few teachings and prayers related to this day written by Black Jews and allies.

Please come and support our KHN youth and enjoy an evening with your community!

I hope that you will join us either outside at KHN (bring a hat in case it’s still sunny) or on Zoom HERE

Wishing a happy Father’s Day to all who celebrate, whether our father(s) are with us or in the next world.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Diana
