Anita Lerman has been involved at KHN since its second meeting.  She was married by Rabbi Sandy and her daughter went all the way through confirmation class at the KHN Shul School, and was a madricha.  Anita, became a bat mitzvah at 52, taught the Gimmel class at KHN for six years (2010-11 through 2016-17) and was a substitute teacher for every class during the 2018-19 school year and throughout the Covid Years.  After she retired professionally in 2020, she rejoined the shul school education committee and helped to re-build the in-person education program at KHN. Anita began her role as Shul School Coordinator, summer 2023.

Professionally, Anita worked as an evaluator for over 30 years.  She specialized in conducting external evaluations of non-profit programs, and in providing technical assistance for organizations conducting self-assessments or participatory evaluations.  She designed, directed and participated on evaluation teams focused on a wide range of subjects including youth development, employment and training, arts education, community schools, community-based collaborations and integrated services, afterschool education, services to seniors, foster care and transitional and supportive housing, college preparation, technical assistance, and organizational evaluation capacity building.  As of 2020, Anita is semi-retired providing limited and mostly cost-free assistance to non-profit organizations and evaluation consultants doing work in the areas described above.

Anita Baker earned her B.A. in Biology from Maryville College in 1982 and an M.S. in Entomology from the University of Tennessee in 1984.  After a wonderful three-year stint as a high school Biology and Chemistry teacher, she earned her Doctorate in Education from Columbia University, Teacher’s College in 1991.  Anita maintained a successful independent evaluation consulting service for more than 25 years after serving as a project director and senior program officer of the Academy for Educational Development in New York City, and with a stint also as a project director at the OMG Center for Collaborative Learning (now Equal Measure) in Philadelphia.
