Dear Hevre,

As I’m in the midst of noticing and appreciating the senses (or the hopefully temporary loss of a couple of them) as well as being in the season of teshuvah, turning, returning, I share this poem with you.

Initiation Song from the Finders Lodge – Ursula Le Guin

Please come bringing new things.
Let very old things come into your hands.
Let what you do not know come into your eyes.
Let desert sand harden your feet.
Let the arch of your feet be the mountains.
Let the paths of your fingertips be your maps
and the ways you go be the lines on your palms.
Let there be deep snow in your inbreathing
and your outbreath be the shining of ice.
May your mouth contain the shapes of strange words. May you smell food cooking you have not eaten. May the spring of a foreign river be your navel.
May your soul be at home where there are no houses. Walk carefully, well-loved one,
walk mindfully, well-loved one,
walk fearlessly, well-loved one.
Return with us, return to us, be always coming home.

This poem is about paying attention, which I will focus on this evening during Kabbalat Shabbat.

It has been wonderful seeing so many of your faces each morning at 9:00 am to mark each day of Elul, the full month we have to prepare for the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe. Please join and support your KHN community members who are leading each morning (except for Shabbat) for 15 minutes at (removed for security)

I look forward to seeing you this evening at 7:00 pm at KHN where I will be co-leading with Anita Lerman or on Zoom at:
